How to judge a preserved rose before you buy it

Preserved roses all look the same in a photograph. They do not age the same way. A preserved rose starts life as a fresh rose, so the grade of the flower that went into the process decides much of the result, and that is decided months before it reaches a box. These are the things worth checking, in person or by asking.

Look at the petal edges. Colour should run evenly all the way to the base of the petal. Blotching, or an outer ring that is darker than the centre, means the dye did not penetrate. Press one petal gently. It should feel supple, close to suede. Brittle petals mean the rose was over-dried or has been sitting in stock too long, and those are the ones that shed. Check the gaps. In a box arrangement the heads should sit edge to edge with no foam showing between them. Ask about the stem. Preserved roses are usually sold as heads on a short stem, which is normal, but it changes what you can do with them later. Smell it. A preserved rose has a faint neutral scent. A strong floral perfume means it was sprayed, and the fragrance fades long before the rose does.

Two claims are worth treating carefully. A lifespan of one to three years is what preservation actually delivers indoors, and anything promising decades is overselling the process.
